Item type:Publication, Entrepreneurial Leadership and Collaborative Resilience: How Positive Relational Dynamics Shape Entrepreneurial Cognition in Emerging Economies(MDPI AG, 2025-11-15); ;Guzmán Vilar Laritza; ; Despite growing scholarly interest in leadership within entrepreneurial settings, little is known about how relational leadership operates in informal, resource-constrained ecosystems. This study examines how entrepreneurial leadership fosters positive relational dynamics and collaborative resilience within Ecuador’s highly informal entrepreneurial ecosystem. Drawing on entrepreneurial cognition and relational leadership theories, it investigates how entrepreneurs act as informal leaders who cultivate trust, empathy, and mutual support in the absence of formal institutional structures. Using an original mixed-method lexical–clustering design, data were collected from 880 micro and small entrepreneurs in Quito, who categorized 75 entrepreneurial attributes using a forced-choice instrument. Two dominant narratives emerged: collaborative resilience (65%), defined by empathy, adaptability, and social cohesion, and structural vulnerability (35%), marked by bureaucracy, fear, and emotional strain. Gender differences revealed that women emphasize relational stress and communal coping, while men focus on structural barriers and operational constraints. The findings extend leadership research by demonstrating how positive relational processes enable entrepreneurs to transform adversity into collective strength. The study advances relational leadership theory by revealing its cognitive and emotional foundations in nontraditional contexts. It offers policy insights for designing inclusive, trust-based ecosystems that promote psychological safety, collaboration, and sustainable entrepreneurship in emerging economies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring MSME Owners’ Expectations of Data-Driven Approaches to Business Process Management(MDPI AG, 2025-04-08); ; ;Laritza Guzmán Vilar;
This study explores the adoption of data-driven approaches to business process management (BPM) by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are crucial for economic growth and job creation but often face challenges in adopting advanced technologies. The research aims to understand the perceived benefits and persistent barriers that MSMEs encounter when implementing data-driven BPM. A critical review of academic literature was conducted, focusing on factors influencing adoption, perceived benefits, and existing challenges. Literature consistently highlights benefits such as process optimization, informed decision making, customer personalization, operational efficiency, adaptability, risk mitigation, automation, organizational culture transformation, innovation, and transparency. However, the review also identifies significant challenges, including technological and infrastructural limitations, resource constraints, training and skill gaps, organizational and cultural resistance, data management and quality issues, difficulties in implementation and change management, and analytical and technical complexities. These findings emphasize that, while data-driven BPM offers substantial opportunities for MSMEs to improve competitiveness and efficiency, successful adoption requires careful consideration of these multifaceted challenges and the development of tailored strategies to overcome them.
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Chain substitution and successive approximation method: Throughput analysis at SMEs(SAGE Publications, 2019-01-01); ; ;
The purpose of this research work is to illustrate that using the logic of theory of constraints (TOC) concerning the Throughput is adequate in management decisions to improve performance in the context of small and medium enterprises. The TOC approach assumes the use of Throughput as an indicator of performance, and in this paper the method of chain substitution and successive approximation is proposed to analyze this indicator. After the implementation of the Throughput per hour analysis, the owner-manager changed her perspective about what her priorities should be in the exercise of the administrative process. The identification of the restriction of what prevented him from obtaining more money allowed him to make the decisions or courses of action that maximized the Throughput per hour, thus improving his performance as owner-manager, the performance of his enterprise and the economic situation of his employees. The originality of this article consists in the application of TOC approach through the design of the indicator Throughput per hour to analyse the performance of an entrepreneur and the application of the chain substitution and successive approximation method for the study of the restrictions that inhibit it.
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Gender matters: A study on job satisfaction in the dynamic environment of ecuadorian startups(Arts and Science Press Pte. Ltd., 2025-11-04); ; ; Job satisfaction is a key driver of organizational effectiveness, influencing productivity, employee retention, and overall workplace well-being. While extensive research exists in developed economies, there is limited evidence on how gender differences influence job satisfaction in the entrepreneurial ecosystems of emerging countries. This study examines gender-based variations in job satisfaction among 399 entrepreneurs from Ecuadorian startups operating in the production, commerce, services, and gastronomy sectors. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire based on a multidimensional framework comprising five dimensions: work content, working conditions, remuneration, teamwork, and well-being. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and correlation analyses were conducted. The results reveal significant gender differences in autonomy, task meaning, and task identification (work content); hygiene, aesthetics, and ergonomics (working conditions); sufficiency and equity (remuneration); and work schedule (well-being). In contrast, teamwork-related variables showed no significant disparities, suggesting that the collaborative culture of startups may buffer against traditional gender gaps. The findings extend organizational behavior and social psychology literature by providing empirical evidence from a Latin American entrepreneurial ecosystem, highlighting the role of socio-cultural norms, domestic responsibilities, and sectoral conditions in shaping job satisfaction. From a managerial perspective, the study highlights the importance of equity-oriented policies—such as transparent remuneration systems, ergonomic workplace design, and flexible scheduling—to promote inclusive, sustainable, and competitive startup environments.
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, The impact of advertising on the income of MSMEs in Ecuador(International Academic Hub, 2023-09-28); ; ; This research aims to evaluate the impact of advertising actions on sales levelin micro and small companies (MSMEs) operating in Ecuadorian territory. This investigation was initially based on the application of a survey to a sample of representative customers of micro and small companies. An in-depth analysis of the impact of advertising expenses on income in those organizations where it was found that there was a percentage of its customers who came to the organization motivated by advertising actions. As a main result, the existence of a high level of correlation between advertising expenses and income was verified, which are higher as these expenses increase and advertising actions remain stable over time. This implies that directors of MSMEs must evaluate their capability to carry out advertising expenses and to maintain these for long periods of time. The impact of advertising expenses on the income of organizations has been the subject of analysis for years, these investigations have been oriented fundamentally to the analysis of advertising in large industries, or of brands with a high level of prominence. However, the evaluation of this behaviour in the conditions of MSMEs is scarcely studied, and this type of company is the focus of this research. This study did not make a distinction between the effectiveness of the media chosen for the messages' distribution and the caliber of the advertising messages. Similarly, it failed to establish values or coefficients of relationship between the correlated variables. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Financial Literacy, Trust, and Socioeconomic Determinants of Borrowers’ Behavior in Credit Card Use: A PLS-SEM Analysis(MDPI AG, 2025-12-22); ; ; ; Margarita De Miguel-GuzmánCredit cards play a central role in household financial behavior by combining payment and short-term financing functions shaped by socioeconomic, cognitive, and attitudinal factors. This study examines the determinants of credit card use and repayment behavior in Ecuador, focusing on purchasing power, financial literacy, and institutional trust. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and explanatory design was applied to a probabilistic sample of 550 credit card users from Quito and Santo Domingo. Multivariate analyses and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM)—including formative and hierarchical constructs—were used to validate the proposed behavioral framework. The results show that higher income is associated with more responsible repayment, while financial literacy and trust mediate this relationship through cognitive and attitudinal mechanisms. Moderate R2 values and small-to-moderate f2 effect sizes align with patterns observed in other Latin American credit markets. Behavioral differences also emerge across age, gender, and household composition, underscoring the heterogeneity of financial capability in the region. The findings demonstrate that responsible credit card indebtedness depends not only on economic capacity but also on financial knowledge and institutional trust, offering practical implications for financial inclusion policies and targeted education programs in emerging economies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
