Item type:Publication, Deep Learning-Based Digital, Hyperspectral, and Near-Infrared (NIR) Imaging for Process-Level Quality Control in Ecuador’s Agri-Food Industry: An ISO-Aligned FrameworkEnsuring consistent quality and safety in agri-food processing is a strategic priority for firms seeking compliance with international standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 22000. Traditional inspection practices in Ecuador’s food industry remain largely destructive, labor-intensive, and subjective, limiting real-time decision-making. This study developed a non-destructive, ISO-aligned framework for process-level quality control by integrating digital (RGB) imaging for surface-level inspection, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for internal-quality prediction (e.g., moisture, firmness, and freshness), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for compositional and authenticity analysis, and deep learning (DL) models for automated classification of ripeness, maturity, and defects. Experimental results across four flagship commodities—bananas, cacao, coffee, and shrimp—achieved classification accuracies above 88% and ROC AUC values exceeding 0.90, confirming the robustness of AI-driven, multimodal (RGB–HSI–NIRS) inspection under semi-industrial conveyor conditions. Beyond technological performance, the findings demonstrate that digital inspection reinforces ISO principles of evidence-based decision-making, conformity verification, and traceability, thereby operationalizing the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle at digital speed. The study contributes theoretically by advancing the conceptualization of Quality 4.0 as a socio-technical transformation that embeds AI-driven sensing and analytics within management standards, and practically by providing a roadmap for Ecuadorian SMEs to strengthen export competitiveness through automated, real-time, and auditable quality assurance. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Navigating Uncertainty Through AI Adoption: Dynamic Capabilities, Strategic Innovation Performance, and Competitiveness in Ecuadorian SMEs(MDPI AG, 2025-11-29); ; ; ; Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly positioned as an enabler of strategic renewal and competitiveness for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies. However, its adoption remains limited and uneven, constrained by shortages of skilled talent, weak data infrastructures, and financial barriers. This study examines Ecuadorian SMEs as a representative case within this broader context, analyzing survey data from 385 firms to diagnose AI adoption patterns and validate a structural model linking AI adoption, dynamic capabilities, and strategic innovation performance. Results from Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) confirm that AI adoption enhances innovation and competitiveness both directly and indirectly through dynamic capabilities, specifically firms’ abilities to sense opportunities, seize them through innovation, and reconfigure resources. The model explains 41% of the variance in strategic innovation performance, providing robust empirical support for the proposed AI-Driven Dynamic Capabilities Framework for Strategic Innovation and Competitiveness. The study clarifies how perceptual and contextual enablers of adoption (TAM/TOE) interact with capability-building mechanisms (RBV/DCT), offering a more integrated understanding of how SMEs assimilate AI under resource constraints. These findings demonstrate how SMEs translate early adoption into strategic advantage under conditions of uncertainty. The study also offers actionable guidance by showing that the most effective interventions for SMEs focus on strengthening foundational data and organizational capabilities rather than promoting complex AI systems beyond current readiness levels. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Application of a methodology based on the Theory of Constraints in the sector of tourism services(Omnia Publisher SL, 2017-04-19); ;Milagros Pérez Pravia; ;
Purpose: The objective of the research was aimed at achieving the implementation of the theory of constraints on the operating conditions of a hotel, which differs by its characteristics of traditional processes that have applied this method, from the great heterogeneity of resources needed to meet the demand of customers.Design/methodology/approach: To achieve this purpose, a method of generating conversion equations that allowed to express all the resources of the organization under study depending on the number of customers to serve facilitating comparison between different resources and estimated demand through techniques developed traditional forecasting, these features were integrated into the classical methodology of theory of constraints.Findings: The application of tools designed for hospitality organizations allowed to demonstrate the applicability of the theory of constraints on entities under conditions different from the usual, develop a set of conversion equations of different resources facilitating comparison with demand and consequently achieve improve levels of efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.Originality/value: The originality of the research is summarized in the application of the theory of constraints in a very different from the usual conditions, covering 100% of the processes and resources in hospitality organizations.
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The impact of advertising on the income of MSMEs in Ecuador(International Academic Hub, 2023-09-28); ; ; This research aims to evaluate the impact of advertising actions on sales levelin micro and small companies (MSMEs) operating in Ecuadorian territory. This investigation was initially based on the application of a survey to a sample of representative customers of micro and small companies. An in-depth analysis of the impact of advertising expenses on income in those organizations where it was found that there was a percentage of its customers who came to the organization motivated by advertising actions. As a main result, the existence of a high level of correlation between advertising expenses and income was verified, which are higher as these expenses increase and advertising actions remain stable over time. This implies that directors of MSMEs must evaluate their capability to carry out advertising expenses and to maintain these for long periods of time. The impact of advertising expenses on the income of organizations has been the subject of analysis for years, these investigations have been oriented fundamentally to the analysis of advertising in large industries, or of brands with a high level of prominence. However, the evaluation of this behaviour in the conditions of MSMEs is scarcely studied, and this type of company is the focus of this research. This study did not make a distinction between the effectiveness of the media chosen for the messages' distribution and the caliber of the advertising messages. Similarly, it failed to establish values or coefficients of relationship between the correlated variables. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Socio-Cultural and Behavioral Determinants of FinTech Adoption and Credit Access Among Ecuadorian SMEs(MDPI AG, 2026-01-14); ; ; ; Margarita De Miguel GuzmánThis study analyzes the socio-cultural and behavioral determinants of FinTech adoption and access to credit among Ecuadorian SMEs. A probabilistic sample of 600 firms, operating in the services, commerce, information and communication technologies (ICT), and industry sectors, was surveyed to ensure representation of the country’s productive structure. The model integrates financial literacy, institutional trust, and perceived accessibility as key independent variables, with FinTech adoption as a digital behavioral factor and access to credit and credit conditions as the primary dependent outcomes. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), complemented by multi-group invariance tests and cluster analysis, the study evaluates seven hypotheses linking cognitive, perceptual, and digital mechanisms to financing behavior and firm performance. Results show that financial literacy and institutional trust significantly improve access to formal credit, with perceived accessibility acting as a partial mediator. FinTech adoption enhances credit conditions but remains limited among micro and small firms. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening financial education programs, simplifying credit procedures to reduce perceived barriers, and developing trust-building regulatory frameworks for digital finance. The results highlight the importance of socio-cultural and behavioral factors in shaping SME financing decisions and contribute to the understanding of financial inclusion dynamics in emerging economies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Contributions to the planning of human resources in the territorial level(Inderscience Publishers, 2018); ; ; ;Clara E. Marrero FornarisPurpose: The objective of the present research is to design and apply a methodology to evaluate the logistics system in the transportation process in a base vehicle fleet, which contributes to decrease the costs of distribution and to increase the performance of the logistics system of the organization. Design/methodology: The proposal of a holistic technology for the management of this process is carried out, which integrates indicators and tools that improve control and decision-making activities in this area. Findings: The application of the procedure developed in the selected organization contributed to the identification of deficiencies related to the availability of the equipment and the needs of the clients, the low technical availability of the automotive plant, the low utilization of the capacity of the freight vehicles, the absence of a plan of measures to diminish the empty routes of the transport and the overconsumption of fuel due to the accomplishment of extra trips. Aspects that contributed to the redesign of some of the main functions of physical distribution such as itinerary planning, selection of means of transport and analysis of operating indicators, aspects that favored the optimization of the number of trips and, consequently, the adequate use of the equipment and the loads to be transported, observing a saving of 15% in the fuel consumption per load transported. Originality: The originality of the present research lies in the combination of different theories and techniques that contribute from a holistic approach to the logistics evaluation of the transportation process, facilitating the optimization of transportation requirements, its operation and maintenance. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Managing Physical and Market Constraints to Make Investment Decision: A Methodological Proposal Programmed in MATLAB(SAGE Publications, 2023-07-20); ; ;
The need to seek a balance between installed capacities and demand is an imperative for all companies. To respond to this demand, various proposals have been formulated, among which the Theory of Constraints stands out, although the application of these methodologies is always limited by financial availability. This research shows the results of the application of a methodological proposal applied in a pharmaceutical laboratory that allows managing the increase in physical or market constraints, as appropriate, also considering the incidence of capacities in supply chain management. To achieve the proposed objective, programming in MATLAB R2019a is used. The systematic application of the methodology allowed an optimal use of financial availability, an increase in the capacity utilization and an increase in the profits generated during the process.
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Identification of variables and their influence on the human resources planning in the territorial level(Omnia Publisher SL, 2016-05-31); ; ;
Purpose: The purpose of this paper lies in the use of experimental way through empirical tools for identification of the set of variables and their interrelationships and influences on the human resources planning at the territorial level.Design/methodology/approach: The methodology used to verify the existence of the variables that affect the planning of human resources at the territorial level consists of two phases: a qualitative study of the variables that influence the planning of human resources, where the explicit variables are measured and / or implied raised in the literature analyzing the main contributions and limitations expressed by each of the authors consulted. Then it proceeds to confirmatory phase (quantitative) to prove the existence of the dimensions of the planning of human resources in the territorial level through the use of multivariate statistics through the combination of expert analysis and techniques of factorial grouping.Findings: Identification is achieved by using empirical methods, variables that affect human resources planning at the territorial level, as well as their grouping essential dimensions, while the description of a theoretical model that integrates the dimensions is made essential and relationships that affect human resource planning at the regional level, which is characterized by the existence of systemic and prospective nature.Originality/value: The literature shows two streams that address a wide range of approaches to human resources planning. The first is oriented from the business object and the second part of the management in highlighting a limited territorial level to address this latest theoretical development, an element that has contributed to the fragmented treatment of human resources planning and management in general at this level. The originality of this paper is part of the creation and adaptation, on a scientific basis of a theoretical model developed from the conceptual contribution of this process at the territorial level where the key variables that affect this process are integrated, highlighting the systemic approach prospective based on solid scientific foundations.
