Item type:Publication, Comparison of the effectiveness and safety between autologous bone grafts and xenografts for the treatment of alveolar bone defects: Overview of systematic reviews using FRISBEE methodology(Facultad de Odontologia, Universidad de Concepcion, 2022-12-30) ;Kevin Cabrera-Navarrete; <jats:p>Introduction: Due to the extensive number of studies developed on periodontal pathologies and the clinical need generated to correct bonvze defects, we have carried out an Overview of systematic reviews using the FRISBEE methodology. Material and Methods: Through this study we expect to bridge the knowledge gap generated regarding the clinical question on the effectiveness of autologous bone substitutes and xenografts in maxillary and mandibular bone defects. Results: For this study, we carried out a systematic search in Epistemonikos and PubMed, we included 3 systematic reviews and 5 primary studies included in these reviews to extract their data. We analyzed data using RevMan 5.4. and GRADEpro. Assessed outcomes included: bone gain [MD 0.06 mm lower (0.26 lower to 0.14 higher)] and bone resorption [MD 0.03 mm higher (0.12 lower to 0.18 higher)], where no significant differences were found between the study groups. The certainty of the evidence was moderate for both outcomes. Bone length and bone density outcomes were not measured or reported in the included studies. Conclusion: We concluded that there are no significant clinical differences between the application of autologous bone grafts and xenografts for bone defects correction for the assessed outcomes, therefore, these biomaterials should be applied at the discretion of the clinician and according to the needs and preferences of patients.</jats:p> - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Quality and Bias in Randomized Controlled Trials Published in Latin American Nursing Journals: A Meta‐Epidemiological Study(Wiley, 2025-09-24) ;Diana Buitrago García ;Melixa Medina‐Aedo; ;Wendy Rodriguez VargasMónica Lozano HernándezIntroduction: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are essential for evidence‐based nursing care. However, the quality of reporting and adherence to methodological standards in Latin American nursing journals remains unclear. This study evaluates the characteristics, reporting quality, and potential risk of bias of RCTs published in Latin American nursing journals. Objective: To assess the reporting compliance and risk of bias of RCTs published in Latin American nursing journals. Design: Meta‐research study. Methods: A comprehensive handsearch of 29 Latin American nursing journals was performed covering publications from 2000 to 2024. Identified RCTs were assessed for adherence to CONSORT reporting guidelines and evaluated for risk of bias. Outcomes were classified using the COMET taxonomy. A descriptive analysis was performed. Results: A total of 6377 references were screened, identifying 34 eligible RCTs, most published after 2018. The median CONSORT compliance was 19 reported items (IQR 16–22). High compliance (> 90%) was observed in abstract reporting items, study objectives, and participant selection criteria. However, critical methodological features such as randomization procedures, blinding, and protocol registration showed low adherence (< 40%). Risk of bias was mostly rated as having “some concerns”, largely due to insufficient reporting. According to the COMET taxonomy, the most frequently reported outcome domains were “Delivery of care” and “Physical functioning”. Conclusions: Reporting compliance and risk of bias of RCTs published in Latin American nursing journals presents significant gaps, particularly in key methodological domains. These shortcomings hinder transparency, reproducibility, and integration into evidence synthesis. Strengthening editorial policies and enforcing reporting standards could enhance the quality and reliability of published research in Latin American nursing journals. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Dental caries prevention in pediatric patients with molar incisor hypomineralization: a scoping review(MRE Press, 2023) ;Anthony Darío Pacheco Jiménez ;Victoria Salomé Altamirano Mora ;Mónica Dávila<jats:p>This scoping review aims to summarize the available evidence on strategies employed in preventing caries in patients with molar incisor hypo-mineralization (MIH). MIH refers to an enamel defect involving opacities, and sometimes post-eruptive degradation due to enamel porosity; resulting in outcomes ranging from a mild atypical caries to severe coronary destruction. A systematic review was conducted for literature in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Epistemonikos and Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS). The search was aimed at studies published between January 2010 and February 2022. Data were independently selected and extracted. 989 studies were found from the systematic search and 8 studies met the eligibility criteria. Most studies evaluated remineralization and cariogenic risk, both of which are crucial elements in caries prevention, as well as decreased sensitivity. The included studies investigated fluoride varnish, dental sealants, giomers, casein, and Icon as preventative methods for dental caries. Several methods for preventing dental caries in paediatric patients with MIH exist, but more research is needed to determine their effectiveness and safety. Any preventive intervention should consider the etiological aspects of the disease, the risk of caries, the type and extent of lesions, hypersensitivity level and patient’s age. Zambrano-Achig<jats:p>In the recent years, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has gained importance in regenerative medicine due to its attributed tissue-inducing properties. However, it is still unclear whether there are benefits from using PRF with open flap debridement (OFD) for the treatment of intrabony defects compared to OFD alone. For this reason, in this study, we performed an overview of systematic reviews with Friendly Summaries of the Body of Evidence using Epistemonikos methodology on the use of PRF with OFD compared to OFD alone for the treatment of intrabony defects. We performed a systematic search in the Epistemonikos database. We extracted data from the included systematic reviews and reanalyzed the data of primary studies and generated a summary of the findings table. We used Review Manager (RevMan) v5.3 software and GRADEpro software for data analysis and data presentation. Eighteen systematic reviews were included after full-text screening, which had 16 clinical trials. Results were reported by the mean difference (MD); the following outcomes were analyzed: change in intrabony defect depth (MD: 1.37 mm more), change in radiographic bone defect filling (MD: 37.26% more), change in probing depth (MD: 1.22 mm more), change in clinical attachment level (MD: 1.32 mm more), and change in gingival margin level (MD: 0.31 more). Item type:Publication, COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Monitoring Studies in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)—A Systematic Review of Study Designs and Methods(MDPI AG, 2023-05-29) ;Malede Mequanent Sisay; ;Alhadi Khogali Osman ;Putri Widi SaraswatiBinyam Tilahun<jats:p>Background: Post-marketing vaccine safety surveillance aims to monitor and quantify adverse events following immunization in a population, but little is known about their implementation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to synthesize methodological approaches used to assess adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination in LMICs. Methods: For this systematic review, we searched articles published from 1 December 2019 to 18 February 2022 in main databases, including MEDLINE and Embase. We included all peer-reviewed observational COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring studies. We excluded randomized controlled trials and case reports. We extracted data using a standardized extraction form. Two authors assessed study quality using the modified Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. All findings were summarized narratively using frequency tables and figures. Results: Our search found 4254 studies, of which 58 were eligible for analysis. Many of the studies included in this review were conducted in middle-income countries, with 26 studies (45%) in lower-middle-income and 28 (48%) in upper-middle-income countries. More specifically, 14 studies were conducted in the Middle East region, 16 in South Asia, 8 in Latin America, 8 in Europe and Central Asia, and 4 in Africa. Only 3% scored 7–8 points (good quality) on the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale methodological quality assessment, while 10% got 5–6 points (medium). About 15 studies (25.9%) used a cohort study design and the rest were cross-sectional. In half of them (50%), vaccination data were gathered from the participants’ self-reporting methods. Seventeen studies (29.3%) used multivariable binary logistic regression and three (5.2%) used survival analyses. Only 12 studies (20.7%) performed model diagnostics and validity checks (e.g., the goodness of fit, identification of outliers, and co-linearity). Conclusions: Published studies on COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance in LMICs are limited in number and the methods used do not often address potential confounders. Active surveillance of vaccines in LMICs are needed to advocate vaccination programs. Item type:Publication, Combination of orthognathic surgery and condylectomy in active condylar hyperplasia: a case report(Facultad de Odontologia, Universidad de Concepcion, 2025-12-26) ;Jorge Maldonado-Alvear ;Leonardo OrellanaCase Report: Active condylar hyperplasia is a rare condition that often leads to progressive facial asymmetry in adolescents and young adults. Surgical treatment, usually involving a condylectomy, is necessary to stop condylar overgrowth. In certain cases, orthognathic surgery is also required to correct associated skeletal abnormalities. This case report presents an 18-year-old female with right-sided active condylar hyperplasia who underwent simultaneous low condylectomy and orthognathic surgery. Digital planning with virtual surgical simulation was used preoperatively to guide the procedure. A postoperative evaluation revealed a discrepancy of approximately 2 mm compared to the planned outcome, indicating a high degree of surgical accuracy. Conclusions: This case highlights the potential of combining condylectomy with orthognathic surgery, supported by virtual planning, as an effective strategy to correct asymmetry and achieve long-term functional and aesthetic stability in specific patients.
